Senate Passes Aid Package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, Includes Provision on TikTok

The Senate passed a bill to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, sending it to President Biden's desk. The legislation also includes a provision to force the sale of TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, or face a U.S. ban of the app. The final vote was 79-18, showing rare bipartisanship. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the bill's passage after months of effort. President Biden plans to sign it into law, with funding of approximately $60 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for Taiwan and Indo-Pacific security. The bill, similar in spending to an earlier foreign aid bill, also contains other foreign policy measures. TikTok has expressed plans for a legal challenge if the bill becomes law, having spent millions on lobbying against it. The bill faced internal GOP conflict, with some Republicans threatening House Speaker Mike Johnson over the aid package. Despite this, Johnson decided to move forward with the bill after bipartisan pressure following Iran's attempted attack in April. Former President Trump has expressed support for Johnson, who has a narrow majority in the House.
